What to Expect After a Hair Transplant
Recovering from a hair transplant is a process that unfolds over months, not days. Understanding what to expect at each stage helps you prepare and get the best possible result.
The First Week
In the days immediately after your procedure, you will notice small scabs forming around each transplanted follicle. This is completely normal. The treated area will feel tender and you may experience some mild swelling around the forehead and eyes, which typically resolves within three to five days.
Avoid touching or scratching the recipient area. Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling and follow your clinic’s washing instructions carefully from day two onward.
Weeks Two to Four
Around the two-week mark, many patients experience what is known as shock loss. The transplanted hairs shed — this is expected and is not a sign that the procedure has failed. The follicles beneath the scalp remain intact and will begin producing new hair growth.
Month Three to Six
New hair growth typically becomes visible around the three-month mark, though it may appear thin or slightly wiry at first. By month six, you should see meaningful coverage and the hair will begin to take on a more natural texture.
The Final Result
Full results are generally visible at twelve months. The transplanted hairs are permanent and will continue to grow naturally for life. Most patients find that the result closely matches the density and direction of their existing hair.
